Hydraulics technology moves the floor

Tie-rod cylinders are ideal for controlling the floor movement of variable level swimming pools.

The hydraulic cylinder Division of Parker Hannifin has introduced an innovative range of tie-rod cylinders ideal for controlling the floor movement of variable level swimming pools. Variable level swimming pools offer the ability to alter the geometry of the pool floor allowing various activities, such as aqua aerobics, water polo, disabled swimming, synchronised swimming and diving, to be performed without the need for complex and costly multiple-pool facilities or extensive structural modifications. In addition, the floors can be locked at floor level to give extra floor space to enable full dry use of the swimming pool area.

Parker's latest tie-rod cylinders control the position of the swimming pool floor through stainless steel wires, which exit the pool through specially designed seals in the pool wall.

As a result, pool floors manufactured from stainless steel or high density polyethylene can be raised and lowered at speeds of around 0.35m/min, with the speed being easily adjustable to suit differing requirements.

The use of Parker hydraulics technology, linked to the latest generation of control systems, means that accurate positioning of moveable swimming pool floors can be achieved at the touch of a button, while the use of electronic water depth indicators with audible and visual alarms and fail-safe interlocks linked to the Parker hydraulic cylinders ensure optimum safety.

Parker Hannifin's hydraulic tie rod cylinders incorporate a number of innovative features, designed to improve overall performance and reliability, while extending operating life.

For example, piston rods are manufactured from precision ground, high tensile carbon alloy steel, hard chrome plated and polished, to eliminate the problems caused by impact damage, scratches and abrasions, which can result in shortened gland seal life.

Similarly, the steel cylinder body tube is surface finished to minimise internal friction and wear, prolonging the life of piston seals.

In addition, the polyurethane gland seals are matched to heavy duty wiper seals, to prevent the ingress of contamination.

Housed in a detachable gland bearing, these seals can generally be inspected and replaced without dismounting the cylinder, and pressure-energised body seals ensure that each cylinder remains leak-tight.

Parker hydraulic cylinders are installed by ADM Moving Floor Systems, a specialist in moveable swimming pool floors, bulkheads and submersible booms.
