Flexible production cell has 5-axis machining

A flexible production cell with two independent single-spindle/twin-spindle machining centers and a four-position pallet changer, has been up-graded with a 5-axis version with faster tool change.

MC4 is a flexible production Cell with two independent single-spindle/twin-spindle machining centers and a four-position pallet changer, now up-graded with a 5-axis version. The machine can operate with two independent working stations, each one with five interpolating axes, with a chip-to-chip time lower than 1s. While one spindle is cutting, the other one changes the tool in concealed time and moves into position for the next operation.

Five-sided machinings can be therefore done in one chucking and simultaneously performed in the two working stations, without loosing the possibility to use the machine as twin-spindle (when A-axis is positioned at = 0 deg).

Overall machine design has taken operator ergonomic into consideration: in fact, it offers wide visibility and easy access to the machining area, as well as to the operator 's workstation.

The coolant and chips fall freely into the chip conveyor, thus avoiding overheating the table and the entire supporting structure, that would consequently affect machine performance in terms of accuracy.

* Machine frame - Riello Sistemi designed and engineered a monolithic frame with reticulated ribs to contain the machine weight and at the same time maximize static rigidity.

Positioning on few location points, no need for foundations and minimum floor space requirement allow for the machine to be transported fully assembled, quickly installed and easily moved in the workshop.

* Rotary tables - the two pallet-holder rotary tables are built with two rotating axes, perpendicular one each other (A- and B-axis) with a continuous CNC controlled motion.

The 'direct drive' motor assures excellent dynamics and high accuracy, thanks to the total absence of backlash and to the high resolution direct read-out of the position.

The pallets are positioned and clamped on four tapers, so assuring great stability and rigidity during machining operations.

* pallet changer - the four position high speed pallet changer allows for automated loading/unloading operations.

It can rotate of 180 deg or 90 deg so to run the two stations in parallel or in sequence.

* tool changer - the electro-mechanically driven tool changer grants high reliability combined with minimum changeover time; during the tool change, spindle and tool tapers are automatically cleaned.

* Guarding - overall guarding has doors allowing easy access, no telescopic covers, totally sealed and simple guards designed to preserve throughout time sliding guide-ways, motors, transmission elements and at the same time permitting easy access for maintenance.
